But after an uninspiring goal-less 1st half, Manchester United took the lead in the 2nd half with a goal from Englands record goal scorer Bobby Charlton. With just 10 minutes left however, Benfica's late pressure paid off as Graca equalized and sent the tie into extra time.
It was 30 minutes of football that will never be forgotten, as Manchetser United ran out 4-1 winners. George Best, Brian Kidd and Bobby Charlton got the goals and became living legends at Old Trafford.
The game was one of the most emotional nights of British Football as Captain Bobby Charlton lifted the cup and the whole of Britain celebrated as Manchester United became the first English club to win the European Cup and Matt Busby had finally achieved his lifetime's ambition.
Manchester United were the kings of Europe at last.
